République Libre de Devant-le-Po

Le monument commémoratif de la guerre 40-45.

Alors qu'on vient de fêter le 80e anniversaire de la paix revenue en Europe, le monument commémoratif est terminé avec un peu de retard et n'a pu être installé en 2025.
Il est dédié à la 30^th Infantry Division qui délivra Devant-le-Pont le 8 septembre 1944 et Visé le 12, et particulièrement au soldat Waymon R. Lawhorn tué sur l'île Robinson le 12.

Alors qu'il se rasait, il a été touché par le tir d'un sniper de l'autre côté du pont.
Le monument est réalisé d'après une photo prise à Devant-le-Pont le 8 septembre 1944 dans la Rue de Tongres, actuelle Avenue Franklin Roosevelt.

Ce sera un bas-relief en taille quasi 100%; 125 cm de haut pour 150 de large et 25 d'épaisseur.

Inauguration le 13 juin 2026.
Faute d'emplacement concédé par la ville de Visé, il sera mis sur un terrain privé et inauguré sur invitation.

Les endroits suggérés étaient à droite au Square du 12^e de Ligne, presque en face d'où la photo fut prise, ou en face du cimetière, là où la 30th ID avait installé un campement de près de 1.000 soldats et un hôpital de campagne sur l'île.

Il sera installé sur un terrain occupé par les soldats en septembre 1944

While we have just celebrated the 80th anniversary of the return of peace to Europe, the memorial has been completed somewhat behind schedule and could not be installed in 2025.
It is dedicated to the 30th Infantry Division, which liberated Devant-le-Pont on September 8, 1944, and Visé on the 12th, and particularly to Private Waymon R. Lawhorn,
killed on Robinson Island on the 12th. While shaving, he was hit by a sniper's shot from across the bridge.
The monument is based on a photograph taken in Devant-le-Pont on September 8, 1944, on Rue de Tongres, now Avenue Franklin Roosevelt.
It will be a bas-relief, almost life-size; 125 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 25 cm thick.
Inauguration on June 13, 2026.
Due to the lack of a suitable location provided by the city of Visé, it will be placed on private land and inaugurated by invitation only.
The suggested locations were to the right of the Square du 12e de Ligne, almost directly opposite where the photograph was taken, or opposite the cemetery, where the 30th Infantry Division had established a camp for nearly 1,000 soldiers and a field hospital on the island.
It will be installed on land occupied by soldiers in September 1944

Le sculpteur a fait l'ébauche en terre.
Il a ensuite été scanné en 3D, une machine CNC a fait la majeure partie du travail
Le sculpteur intervient à la fin pour les détails.

Il a essayé de donner les traits du Private Lawhorn au soldat de l'avant plan ce qui n'est pas évident avec une simple photo de face.
Les soldats sont devant le drapeau américain..
A gauche le drapeau améeicain et à droite une borne, similaire aux bornes de Voie de la Liberté de la route de Patton, car la voie de la liberté chez nous, elle passe par Devant-le-Pont.
Le nom de Lawhorn sera gravé, et le socle de 30 cm reprendra la XXXth Infantry Division.
Autour, un cadre de feuilles de chêne et de laurier.

The sculptor created the initial clay model.
It was then 3D scanned, and a CNC machine did most of the work.
The sculptor adds the details at the end.
He tried to give the soldier in the foreground the features of Private Lawhorn, which is not easy with just a front-facing photograph.
The soldiers are standing in front of the American flag.
On the left is the American flag, and on the right is a marker, similar to the Liberty Road markers along Patton Road, because our Liberty Road passes through Devant-le-Pont.
The name Lawhorn will be engraved, and the 30 cm base will bear the inscription of the XXXth Infantry Division.

Around it will be a border of oak and laurel leaves.

It is almost entirely self-funded.

Transportation takes 3-4 weeks, so unfortunately it couldn't be installed by July 21, 2025.
It will be installed in 2026. I'll need a lot of help and a crane; it weighs approximately 900 kg.

A noter que c'est pour des réalisations semblables que j'organise brocantes et marchés et qu'à force de me mettre des bâtons dans les roues il ne sera plus possible de faire du culturel...
Il faut 3-4 semaines pour le transport, il n'a malheureusement pas pu être mis en place pourle 21 juillet 2025.
Il sera placé en 2026.
